Today is a warning shot to the Tasmanian Liberals. It’s time to make the bold, brave and right decision to walk away from the stadium.
We can’t afford a shiny new $1 billion stadium. That was true two years ago. And the ugly truth was revealed last week, when the Tasmanian Liberals handed down a budget billions of dollars in debt.
Essential services shouldn’t suffer because of a stadium the Liberals decided we just had to have. It’s why I got the $240m in federal funding for Macquarie Point exempt from GST. And it’s why I’ve continued to oppose the stadium.
I greatly respect Jeremy Rockliff and his long political career. But he’s the one who’s refused to stand up and do the right thing for Tasmanians.
I’ve said that if the Tasmanian Liberals don’t listen to the people of Tasmania, this stadium will cost them more than a billion dollars. It’ll cost them their jobs. And it looks like that might just happen today."
