Tyrrell proud to support salmon & West Coast community

Senator Tammy Tyrrell, Independent Senator for Tasmania, was proud to support the Federal Government's bill to protect salmon workers in Macquarie Harbour this evening.

"Everyone’s talking about a fish but to me, this issue has always been about the humans at the heart of it. The son who watched his father work on the farm and wanted to be just like his dad (and he is!). The worker who travels an hour each way to get to work every single day.

"I couldn’t stand by and watch jobs go in Macquarie Harbour if it meant people couldn't afford groceries or to pay rent. When it meant people would have to leave the West Coast and the Strahan community. That’s why I was proud to support this bill.

"Salmon farming in Tassie has become an all or nothing argument. But I believe there’s a way the industry can thrive and we can look after the environment at the same time. It’s not about compromise, it’s about finding solutions that actually improve outcomes for both sides."

Senator Tyrrell was disappointed three Tasmanian Senators chose not to support the bill and the workers at the heart of this issue.

The bill passed the Senate after 10pm on 26th March 2025.
