Defence Facility a win for transparency
Senator Tammy Tyrrell, Independent Senator for Tasmania, comments on today’s announcement that the Defence Cadet Facility at Newnham is finally moving forward:
“Growing up I was taught that if you say you’re going to do something, you do it. I’ve pushed hard on this project because the Launceston community was left in the dark while the bureaucrats spent years squabbling.”
Senator Tyrrell passed a motion in the Senate on December 2023 for correspondence on the Cadet Facility project between UTAS, the Tasmanian State Government and the federal Department of Defence to be made public.
This resulted in 4000 documents being published in February 2024.
“We wouldn’t be celebrating this announcement today if I hadn’t pushed for correspondence to be made public. The documents revealed that UTAS were being the problem child in this partnership and holding it up.
“This is the value of an independent Senator solely here for Tassie. I’m holding the major parties to account to deliver on their promises and not letting them sweep things under the rug.”
