Family & Domestic Leave is leave by wrong name

"Family and Domestic Violence (FDV) leave could be helping so many people if it had a different name.

"There’s been low uptake of FDV leave because people don’t want to tell their boss that they’re experiencing domestic violence to get the leave. And some people who do tell their boss are being rejected because they don’t have enough evidence of their abuse.

"Employers have no right to say to a person that they have to meet a specific standard before they're entitled to safety and protection.

"That’s why I pushed two years ago for this entitlement to be called ‘emergency leave’ instead. I stand by the call. It means you’d just have to tell your boss you’re experiencing an emergency to access the leave.

"Paid family and domestic violence is working for the people who can access it. But doing it in a way that asks people to choose between their privacy and their safety means more people are suffering - people we could be helping."
