Social media ban perfect example of how not to do government
Senator Tammy Tyrrell, Independent Senator for Tasmania, says sending the Social Media Minimum Age Bill 2024 to committee for three business days won't even scratch the surface of the bill.
"The Senate shouldn’t pass bills when Labor hasn’t bothered to do the work. They can’t even use the ‘my dog ate my homework’ excuse on this one.
"Labor and the Coalition say they’ll fine social media platforms who don’t enforce a ban on under 16’s. They don’t know how platforms can actually enforce a ban yet, just that they should do it. Sounds reasonable. It’s just one of the many holes in the bill that hasn’t been answered.
"Shoving bills through for a headline win isn’t good government and it’s not good for the Australians we represent. I keep saying I want to do politics differently. This bill is the perfect example of how things shouldn’t be done."
